How to Add Kick Chat to OBS or Streamlabs

Aug 23, 2026ยท5 min read

There are two different reasons to want Kick chat outside the Kick website: showing it to your audience as an overlay, or getting it somewhere you can actually glance at while you play. The setup is nearly the same; the right answer for most people is the second one.

Adding Kick chat to OBS

  • โ€ขOpen your channel on Kick and use the chat popout control to open chat in its own window. The address bar now holds the standalone chat URL โ€” copy it.
  • โ€ขIn OBS, add a new source and choose Browser.
  • โ€ขPaste the URL into the URL field.
  • โ€ขSet Width and Height to the space you want it to fill โ€” around 400ร—600 works for a vertical chat column. Setting it too narrow is the most common reason chat looks broken.
  • โ€ขPosition the source in your scene.

Streamlabs is the same process โ€” add a Browser source, paste the popout URL, set the dimensions. The naming differs slightly between versions but the concept is identical.

When it does not work

Three things account for almost every failure:

  • โ€ขThe source is too small. Chat needs room to lay out; a narrow source can render as an empty box. Widen it before assuming the URL is wrong.
  • โ€ขCached state. In OBS, right-click the source and refresh its cache. This fixes a blank or frozen chat more often than anything else.
  • โ€ขThe wrong URL. It is easy to copy the channel URL rather than the popout URL. The popout address is the one that loads only chat, with no player on the page.

If chat loads but looks wrong rather than empty, that is styling rather than connection โ€” a custom CSS block in the browser source can adjust font size and background, and setting the background to transparent is what makes an overlay sit cleanly over gameplay.

Overlay or second screen?

Putting chat on stream is popular, but think about who it is for. Your viewers can already see chat next to the player. An on-screen overlay mostly serves people watching a VOD or a clip later โ€” real value, but a narrower one than it first appears, and it costs you layout space permanently.

For your own use, a second monitor or a tablet beside you is better than an overlay. You want to be able to glance rather than stare, and an overlay inside your own scene is usually in the worst possible place for that.

The problem a browser source does not solve

Getting chat onto a second screen changes where the text is. It does not change the fact that on an active stream the text moves faster than you can read while playing, and the genuine questions still scroll past between rounds.

That is a different tool. streamerfriend reads your Kick chat live and gives you the summary instead of the stream of text: the top questions ranked by how many people asked, the mood of the room, spam waves as they form, and your most active chatters. You glance at a handful of things that matter rather than scanning everything. It needs no OBS setup at all โ€” it runs in a browser tab, adds no bot to your channel, and works the same on Twitch and YouTube Live.

Set up the browser source if you want chat visible. Add something that reads it if you want to stop missing things. They solve different problems, and most streamers eventually want both. What else exists for Kick covers the rest of the landscape.

Frequently asked

How do I add Kick chat to OBS?

Open your Kick channel, use the chat popout to get the standalone chat URL, then in OBS add a Browser source and paste that URL. Set the width and height to match the space you want it to fill.

Why is my Kick chat browser source blank?

The three usual causes are a popout URL that was copied incorrectly, a browser source that is too narrow for chat to render into, and cached page state. Refreshing the source cache in OBS fixes most cases.

Should I put chat on stream or on a second monitor?

On a second monitor for most streamers. An on-screen chat overlay takes up space and shows viewers the same messages they can already read. A second screen keeps chat where you can glance at it without giving up layout.
